Makerere University has congratulated its former staff and students who were elected to public office in the 2026 national elections, describing their success as a reflection of the institution’s contribution to leadership, democracy and national development.
In a statement dated January 27, 2026, the university said the election of its alumni and former staff demonstrates Makerere’s role in nurturing not only academic excellence but also leadership, free expression and responsible citizenship.
“Their success is a source of immense pride to the University and a strong affirmation of Makerere’s enduring impact on leadership, public service and national development,” the statement read.
Makerere singled out several members of its community who won elective positions, including Dr Crispus Kiyonga, the Chancellor of Makerere University, who was elected Member of Parliament for Bukonzo West.
Also recognised was Mr Bruce Balaba Kabaasa, Chairperson of the Finance, Planning, Administration and Investment Committee of the University Council, who was elected MP for Rubanda County West.
Among former student leaders, Mr Alionzi Lawrence, a former Guild President, was elected Lord Mayor of Arua City, while Mr Robert Maseruka, also a former Guild President, was elected MP for Mukono South.
Mr Gyaviira Lubowa Ssebina, a former Deputy Bursar at Makerere University, was elected MP for Nyendo-Mukungwe.
The university also congratulated Prof George Willy Lubega, formerly of the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity (COVAB), who was elected MP for Bugangaizi South, and Prof Wilber Manyisa Ahebwa, formerly of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), who was elected MP for Nakaseke North.
Several former guild leaders were re-elected to Parliament, including Anna Ebaju Adeke as Woman MP for Soroti District, Denis Amere Onekalit as MP for Kitgum Municipality, and Hon Gerald Karuhanga as MP for Ntungamo Municipality.
Lillian Aber, a former Vice Guild President, was re-elected as Woman MP for Kitgum District, while Phiona Nyamutoro, also a former Vice Guild President, was elected Woman MP for Nebbi District.
Makerere University said it remains committed to promoting dialogue, democracy and participation in leadership and governance, and expressed confidence that those elected would serve with integrity and dedication.
“We are confident they will serve with wisdom and commitment to the people of Uganda,” the statement said.
The university reaffirmed its motto and mission of preparing leaders for the future, noting that the election outcomes underscore Makerere’s long-standing influence on public life in Uganda.
